6 Things That Always Happen at the Office Christmas Party

On the seventh day of Christmas my employer gave to me… the annual office Christmas party! Usually the most highly-anticipated event of the working year, it’s a chance for everyone to come together, let their hair down and cut loose. As a top catering company in Malta, we’ve been witness to a fair few corporate Christmas events - here are a few things that we swear happen year in, year out!

1. The wallflower becomes the Dancing Queen

You’ve barely ever heard Marlene from Accounts say more than the perfunctory “Good morning” and “Have a nice evening”, but after two generous rounds of celebratory champagne and a tray of shots, she’s putting Beyonce herself to shame.

2. The office klutz WILL knock the Christmas tree over

Or at least, some kind of dangling decorations OR the ever-so-carefully draped tinsel round the barrister. Either way, you spend the night giving a wide berth to Clumsy Carl from HR - you expect to spend the following day recovering from a hangover or food coma, not a concussion.

3. It’s a selfie bonanza

Everyone arrives armed with fully-charged phones and Instagram filters at the ready. Suddenly, the hired photographer finds himself forgotten in a dark corner.

4. You rekindle your love for cheesy holiday music

It’s a truth universally acknowledged that Mariah Carey’s “All I Want For Christmas Is You” will be played on an average of 6 times per night at any Christmas party, along with George Michael’s “Last Christmas”. And of course, no party is truly complete without singing along to “Merry Christmas Everyone” by Shakin’ Stevens.

5. There’s a long, long queue at the buffet table

‘Tis the season for overindulgence! From delicious finger foods to mouth-watering sweets and cakes, nobody holds back as they stuff themselves to the brim. After all, who can resist a plate of steaming hot pastizzi or those irresistible little cheese and cranberry bites?

6. The taxi dilemma

You’ve finally worn yourselves out and it’s time to head home and hit the sack. Problem is, nobody thought of calling ahead for transport. Frantic calls are made to every cab company you can think of, until finally you manage to book a rickety old red van into which 15 or 20 of you tipsily pile in and treat the driver to a drunken rendition of “Bohemian Rhapsody” on the way home.
